The following report was kindly provided by Simon Hamer, Club Chairman.
“Harrogate Bowling Club opened its 2026 season with a wonderfully attended and thoroughly enjoyable launch day, blessed by bright spring weather and a lively mix of returning members and new faces. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of anticipation for the year ahead.
The first arrivals settle in.

The event began with a speech from the Chairman, Simon Hamer, who expressed heartfelt thanks to the Committee and the many volunteers whose hard work made the day possible.

He encouraged members to take part in as many club events as they wished, emphasising the importance of enjoyment, mutual support, and the strong sense of camaraderie that defines the club.
On behalf of the Captains, the Gents' Captain, Gary Preston followed with an update on the season’s plans, introducing several new competitions and inviting entries for the Manor House Challenge. He also outlined upcoming changes to the dress code, ensuring everyone is prepared for the season’s fixtures.
The President, Sue Russell then brought a touch of poetry to proceedings, reciting a poem she had composed celebrating the arrival of Spring...

...and issuing a spirited challenge to the ladies to claim victory in the Canning Cup against the men.
She then delivered the ceremonial first bowl of the season.

and, to no one’s surprise, struck the jack cleanly.
Next came the ever‑popular Spider, which drew plenty of laughter and competitive energy. Congratulations go to Helen Thorpe, who claimed the win with an excellent effort.

With the formalities complete, members took to the green for a relaxed roll‑up, enjoying both the play and the company. It was a fitting start to what promises to be a vibrant and successful season.
All rinks are taken!

And the afternoon's bowling is underway.
There couldn't be a better way to spend your time.

This wasn't a long jack. Players are tested by a high mat.

Fully focussed as a wood approaches the head.

And sporting appreciation of a wood well delivered.

Style King

The first session ends with the customary handshake.

The tea (and beer) break.

Refreshed, the players begin the final session.
The weather seems to be getting better and better.

Changing ends.

Richard offers guidance to his team.
Whilst Phil offers words of encouragement to his.

"Shouldn't we be bowling in that direction?".

The afternoon's bowling draws to a close.

And, sadly, equipment is packed away.

Not to worry, chairs are quickly filled - as are glasses.

And members relax in the late afternoon sun.

Cheers everyone. What a great day.

A warm thank you go to everyone who contributed to making the day such a success. Here’s to a fantastic year of bowling ahead.”
