CLUB NEWS

The gentlemen regain the Canning Cup in a hard fought match.

This report was kindly provided by the Ladies' Captain, Margaret Bailey. Photographs were taken by Richard Yeoman and Jeff Jaycock.

The August Bank Holiday bowling calendar only contains one event of note – the Canning Cup. This traditional fixture is a contest between the gentlemen and ladies of our club for the honour of being able to call themselves ‘Champions’.

2022 was the ladies’ year and that was emphasised at the beginning of the afternoon when they faced the gentlemen and sang the Queen anthem “We are the Champions”. Battle then commenced...

What are you asking me to do?

It's not looking good for the gentlemen.

Determination.

Despair.

Delight.

Relief.

Respect.

At the end of 18 gruelling ends of fiercely competitive bowling the gentlemen were victorious. It had been a very close contest played in the best spirit of the game and the gentlemen won by 13 woods.

Magnanimous in defeat, the Ladies' Captain presents

the Canning Cup to the Gentlemen's Captain.

The afternoon was rounded off with a very enjoyable barbeque where missed shots and chances were discussed, disputed and subsequently forgotten.

Bowling won the day as it always should. Harrogate Bowling Club at its best.

OUR THANKS GO TO MARGARET BAILEY AND BARRY J. SMITH

FOR ORGANISING THIS EVENT AND TO GEORGE AND PAT WISE
