CLUB NEWS

It was all down to the last end!

On Saturday 20th May Harrogate Bowling Club played York Railway Bowling & Social Club at home in the first round of the Men’s County Championship, Triples. Our team consisted of Paul Morton (skip), Lee Coutts (number 2) and Douglas McWee (lead). It was a close, hard-fought match.

The York Railway B&SC quickly established and maintained a small lead, with the HBC team getting ahead about half way through.

But "York Railway" quickly fought back.

And then it was the last end. In the words of the HBC skip - "The position on the last end was that we were 12-15 down and needed a 3 to draw (and play an extra end) or a 4 to win. The jack was a long jack and Douglas managed at lead to be holding a 3. As the number 2's played, Lee managed to protect the head with some well positioned woods and their number 2 was unable to cut it down, the situation of lying 3 moved to the skips. Their skip tried to draw on the backhand but going wide did not come in, I just looked to knock a wood of ours up. Their skips second wood tried to draw on the forehand but in doing so knocked a wood of ours into the head such that we were now lying 4. I played a further blocking wood and their skip then tried again to draw one into the head to cut it down but hit a short wood and the match was ended without me needing to bowl the last wood 16-15...!!"

Our congratulations go to both teams for a high quality match played in excellent spirit. HBC now goes forward to the next round when we will play last years finalists away at York Railway B&SC on June 11th at 2.00 p.m. Why not go and support our team?
