“Ey up, what a great Yorkshire Day!

The following report was kindly provided by Simon Hamer, our Chairman.

"Our special social event on Saturday 1st August brought members together on the green to honour God’s Own County in fine style. The sun held out just enough for a cracking afternoon of woods, laughs, and a proper community spirit.

All the players discs are in and the first round of teams is being organised.

With the preliminary admin out of the way the day was introduced

by Simon (left) and Gary, Gents’ Captain (right).

Simon (not a Yorkshireman) decided to treat everyone to a very Yorkshire poem he had penned and which he read out in a broad Yorkshire accent (he thought).

Ey Up and Bowl On!

(From a Red Rose Chairman)

Ey up, sithee, and welcome here,

To t' finest day in all t' year!

You let a Lankie run thi club,

A Red Rose rogue in t' Yorkshire hub!

Aye, I’m from across t’ border line,

But even I think Yorkshire's fine.

So put down thi bags, unroll thi mat,

And straight on t' head adjust thi hat.

We’re here for bowls, not bloody work,

So don't thee try to skive or shirk.

Just grip thi wood and tek thi stance,

And give that little jack a chance!

Now mind t' bias, don't go wide,

Or end up in t' ditch on t' other side.

If tha rolls it reet, we'll shout "by gow!"

If tha fluffs it up, there’ll be a row.

We’ve scones and cream when t' playing's done,

And pints of ale for everyone!

So play it grand, and play it true,

Happy Yorkshire Day to all of you!

Now let's get t' wood rolling, no more chat,

Winners get t' glory, losers get t' flat!

Highlights from the Green

Friendly roll-up: Members enjoyed a relaxed mixed-rinks game where the focus was strictly on fun over fierce rivalry.

 Yorkshire Day is properly underway.

And fun is in the air.

But there are always ups and downs...

Hope the score isn't an OMEN.

Could some of the players already be enjoying the bar?

Can you get more Yorkshire?

But amidst the fun it's still a competition.

And points need to be earned and woods need to be measured

- even if you are dressed as a bottle of beer.

Lots of smiles and laughter.

Is Marilyn distraught or tying or shoe laces?

Well done everyone.

Tea and treats:

The clubhouse spread featured delicious cakes baked by both Helen Hamer and Sue Russell, alongside clotted cream, strawberries, and endless cups of tea.

Best biased-bowl:

Plenty of good-natured cheering (and groaning) as a few wayward woods took unexpected scenic routes across the turf.

The day's champions:

Congratulations to our men’s winners, Ian Brickley and Roy Barton, and our lady winners, Judith Chappell and Judith Duncan.

Best dressed:

The prize for the themed fancy dress was won by Judith, who brilliantly captured the spirit of the day with a Theakstons Old Peculiar outfit.

A massive thank you: Gratitude goes out to all who took part and contributed generously to the raffle, with all funds raised going directly to our chosen local charity.
