Congratulations everyone. The President’s Charity Day raised over £1000…

“Thirty-six bowlers plus other members gathered at the club on Saturday 15th August to mark the President's Charity Day.

The President welcomed everyone, score cards were handed out and rinks allocated.

Then the bowling started with a traditional "Spider" when everyone simultaneously launched their woods at a jack in the centre of the green in the hope they would somehow end up closest to it.

The 'Spider' was won by Gillian Thompson.

This was followed by twelve ends of bowling "with a twist." The twist being the scoring system which the Gents' Captain promised was straightforward...!

Play is underway.

Bowling is a 'serious fun' sport.

Bowlers of the future look on...

The sun decides to come out - and then went back in again.

The score board suggests one thing, the smiles another.

But it's the scoreboard for the neighbouring rink!

'The Handshake of Respect' as the first round of matches begins to finish.

When's that tea break?

But who wants tea when they've got wine?

Mugs waiting to be filled.

Bowling isn't just about bowling -

it's also about good company.

Somehow the ladies knew their photo was

being taken from the far side of the green!!!

Refreshed, Frank gets down to it...

SHEER DELIGHT.

And a resident squirrel studies the form...

Five (for the moment).

And on another rink it's six in the ditch (so far).

And it looks like things could be going better for the Orange Army.

But it's only one end.

And whilst matches have their ups and downs they all end with a handshake.

And some with an extra flourish.

The winning team was Team K, consisting of Ann O'Halloran, Judith Duncan and Mark Peatman - congratulations to them.

We then enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, the drawing of the raffle and the results of a silent auction, organised by Lynn Devall.

The Silent Auction

Followed by the non-silent auction ot two bottles of whisky.

A thirsty member is called to the bar.

Somewhere in all that happened the President read a poem that she'd written specially for the occasion, extolling the delights of the county of her birth.

At the end of the day the outstanding sum of £1,023.37 was raised for St, Michael's Hospice. This will be added to other monies collected during the year and presented to the hospice at the end of the season.
